Pre-2011 Public Service Announcement

I'd like to take a moment to touch on a word that I feel has been severely overused over the last year. It's something that everyone claims they have, yet in a lot of cases, they are invisible to most of the people around you. That word is haters.

There is a very common misconception of what a hater is, so it's thrown around loosely as a result. If someone disagrees with something you say, or something you do, it does not make them a hater. If you're a writer, and someone doesn't like your book, or your poem...your article, or your short story, that is not a hater. If you're a singer and someone feels you can't sing, or doesn't like the beat or the lyrics to your song. That does not make that person a hater.

Somewhere down the line we've confused hating with having an opinion or preference. Our skin has gotten so thin that we take constructive criticism as a direct insult instead of using what's been said as a tool for growth and longevity in what we are doing.

There are a lot of times that I see people claiming that they have someone hating on them but there is no evidence of such a person saying or doing anything at all towards them. But...whether your haters are make-believe or authentic, be grateful that someone is paying attention to what you're doing, whether they like it or not. No one should have the power to make you step outside of yourself and your normal routine to negatively address them and what you think they make have said about you.

Keep doing what you do regardless and never stop elevating and gravitating towards your goals. It's up to you to make your dreams come true. That responsibility doesn't rest on the shoulders, or out of the mouths of anyone else.

God Bless you.

Reminiscing...

I've always heard that you never get over your first love. I never realized how true that statement is until now. I can let go and move forward all I want but something always seems to bring my thoughts back to you. There is something in this heart of mine that's holding on to your memory, when quite frankly, I'd rather forget. What kid of a hold do you have on me? If it weren't for the fact that I did as God said and forgave you, I'd still hate you right now. The thing is though, when I did allow myself to feel that strongly towards you in such a negative way, I could feel the toll it was taking on me so Idid the righteous thing and now...I can't seem to shake you all over again.

11.29.2010 4 A.M.

It's 4 am and the furthest thing from my mind is sleep. Why? Because to me, that's counter-productive. Sleep is an important part of life yes, it's kind of like hitting the restart button on your PC. It reboots...err...refreshes your mind and body, allowing all of your bodily functions to continue normally. However, contrary to that..the later it gets...the more I seem to function at a higher capacity level. Utilizing every moment of every day that you have is also important. Especially if you have goals to reach and dreams to make reality. That extra 5 minutes, 30 minutes, or 2 hours of sleep may recharge you yes, but that could also be the period in which something that you've been waiting to happen comes to pass. Which is the greater risk? Losing a little sleep? Or missing an opportunity? I'm sure that answer will depend on the person.

I've heard people say that in order to to be successful, you have to be willing to do something different, you have to work to put a plan into action, you have to make sure you're doing something you're passionate about, and you have to want it just as much as you want to breathe. It's taken failed semesters in college as a Computer Technology Major and System Support Technician, and many years of migraines to figure out that although I love technology, it's not what I'm passionate about from a career standpoint. After all the classes and all the lectures, all the tests, and the hours over going through voice recordings, I came to realize that writing is my passion. Writing is the thing that moves and drives me...I absolutely love to create scenes, scenarios and moments for people to visualize, to embrace, to read and feel as if they are either a part of what is happening or that it's being written for or about them. I love the look of satisfaction and gratitude that comes from reading something that's well done, and I love even more when it's directed from things that I've written.

I also love to be able to assist people. On my job, I assist people daily...There have been times when I've gone through moments, hours, days, even weeks of frustration behind the things people ask, and the way they behave themselves. I've recently learned how not to let that aspect of what I do bother me. What I instead focus on is what lies underneath. Why I am there? To assist..to answer questions, to educate, to share what I've learned in hopes of creating a situation where the people that I am assisting can make an informed and conscious decision on the purchase they are attempting to make. That's what I love. That right there is what I hold on to that makes it worth it. Everything I've learned about my job, i did so not in a classroom, but by paying attention to trends, listening to feedback, gathering my own info, doing my own personal comparisons....

am I saying that I'm meant to do what i do on my job? In a sense, yes...but ultimately I feel I have a higher calling than that. You see, the part of the job that I can using, that I've begun to enjoy so much is the fact that I can create scenarios for people..I can create an atmosphere for someone and have them feeling as if they are in their own living room with their 55 inch television watching their favorite movie or their favorite sports team with a nice surround sound encompassing the room while they can almost feel every hit as the tackle is administered. I can make them want things they never even thought about owning because everyone has a personal want...or need, but most don't realize it until someone shows it to them. That is inspiration. There is nothing more powerful that inspiration and motivation and we all need that in our lives. Every individual is not an easy sell but if you build on what they want, deliver that, and then continue the story for them, adding what they could have in addition, or even pulling back to something more realistic for them...most will slowly gain an appreciation for you and before you realize it...you will have their respect. Then they will start to seek and request you. they they won't even look at anything until they see you and get your opinion on it....because at that point, they trust you and they trust your judgment. Do I tell people what they should buy? No. I find out what they seek first..answer any and all questions, present questions of my own, all while building that story for them a little bit at a time...building until I pique their interest, and hopefully ending with a sale.

This is why I lose sleep. Not because I lack focus, but because I am focused. I'm focused on becoming the writer I've always wanted to be. The story-teller I know and I can be, and the man, I know I'm destined to be. The best part of it all, is that I'm not doing it for the money..I'm doing it because I absolutely love writing, I love poetry, and I know exactly how powerful words can be. I can be motivated by the first ray of sunshine that peeks over the horizon in the first stages of morning just as much as others think they can be motivated by a 6 figure paycheck. Not saying that it wouldn't be a blessed thing to see that because for me, it just means that I'd be able to produce more in order to help more and to share more with those that need more but to have that as my main focus, is not where my mind is at all. I will always have a love for electronics and technology, but it will always come second to my passion for literature.

Don Savant is coming. On way or another.....Be Blessed.

I wanna hold you until...
the night's air
meets the coolness of the dawn and...
until
the cool dawn
meets the warmth of the day's sunlight...

Words of Encouragement.

To be chosen in this world is a welcomed event. After years of just existing, it makes you realize that you truly do have a purpose for your life. Starting out in the beginning of life we are told repeatedly that God has a purpose for each of us. Some of us find and embrace it..others seek it until they grow tired. All that is required of you is to pay attention to your life and the things you do. We are all blessed with at least one talent. Your purpose usually lies within that. Don't give up!!!!

Resilience

My thoughts run like marathons in my mind..never-ending. Reaching for my dreams like a running back on the two yard line. Life acting like a goal line defense..on my heels trying to stop me from breaking the plane. Maintaining my sanity in a place where ignorance runs rampant..smiling every step of the way. I will not lose!!!

Contaminated

The fragrance you wear
is so...
intoxicating...
it
draws me in and
holds me hostage
giving a false sense of
hope and
a false notion of
what love really is...

Your kiss
blindfolds and
only allows
what you project to be seen

Your camouflage
is so immaculate that
the illusion of
perfection
is what is seen
when dealing with you

I ask myself
repeatedly
could you be real
because
even though I know that
God created someone for me
at times it feels that
you recreated yourself
to be her
in order for me
not to reject you

So I
reside in this place
dazed and confused
with my mind
truly contaminated
not knowing
where reality left me
and where
your fantasy
has me held

What Happens When We Run Out Of Original Ideas?

With everything being remade, rebooted and rehashed, it seems that people in this world may be running out of original ideas? If you notice though, the people that are turning the world into a huge series of reruns are mostly made up of the people that gave us the originals that we loved so much. We need fresh faces, fresh ideas, fresh concepts in the world right now, but the sad thing is, those that complain the most are the ones that are willing to do the least to change things. What am I saying? I'm saying that if you really want things to change, someone has to step up and change them. Get your priorities in check and get out there and make a difference. Be that next big name in music and/or movies, be that next big producer and/or director. Write that Oscar winning screenplay. Instead of trying to figure out what new drug to try next, or how drunk and high you can get on a daily basis, but your true talents to work. The world needs you to stand up and take your place. Y'all are the future...but sadly enough...this probably won't get through to a lot of you, simply because your heads are stuck in a hazy cloud of smoke.

It's time to be those original ideas that the world needs. I'm about to play my part...what role will you take on? We can do this!!!

Rise and Grind!!!!

It's a brand new day. It's grind time...!!!! It's time to put some of your ideas to work. Everything in this world that we say, do, eat, watch...everywhere we go, what we drive, etc...was all brought to reality from an idea from a concept. The cell phone we use, that was someone's concept. Let's take some time out to cultivate our own ideas and let those things manifest in our lives. Instead of sitting around waiting for the next big thing to hit the stores, let's create the next big thing for others to anticipate.

Let go hey!!!!!!

Random Thought...

Ok, no offense to any of y'all out there that smoke but...

I'm sitting here at the laundromat looking out the window at pouring rain, watching the lightning strike, and listening to the thunder roll like someone up there in heaven is bowling strike after strike when I catch a whiff of a cigarette. So I'm like nah...impossible. Low and behold, there the lady is, sitting on the sidewalk puffin' away.

Y'all some soldiers for real. Y'all will go outside and take y'all smoke break in any weather. It couldn't be me. Lol.

Y'all be blessed.

Ecstasy

Ecstasy

you've got me....
hooked
like a fish on a line
...that was
wading in the water
minding his own...
until you put...
the business on...
me

slowly you walked by
showing off all that God blessed you with
enhanced
by a little somethin' somethin'
that a man that loves
for a woman to
smell like a woman
simply
cannot resist

ahhh
i can feel the mist
rising off of the heat that
is rising between us
as we
build up to that moment

not caring about our surroundings
we begin to dance...
and slowly...we
connect
we...
merge
we...
embrace
we...challenge one another
in a moment of passion
fogging up the clear skies above us
filling the atmosphere
with pure ecstasy

Poetry

i love her
like I love myself
maybe
even a little more...

simply because of her purpose
and
who she is in my life...
or
who i am
because of her...

she loves me like God does...
without condition
no matter
what situation may arise...
I can always
look into her eyes and
see her soul smiling at me
I'm so grateful

Let Me Teach You How To Smile Again

Let Me teach You How To Smile Again

gone are the painful days
all the hurt
the
broken promises
the
shattered dreams...

a new life begins now
with God
with me
with...us
starting fresh and
leaving the past
buried
in your rear view mirror

let me
teach you
how to smile again
that it may
from this day forth
forever
come naturally to you

let me
restore the happiness
that once resided in you
the trust
that you always gave
the love
that he spoke of
yet never delivered

let me love you
like you've always dreamed
remember
how you felt
when
those fantasies roamed through your mind
when
you were touched...
mind body and soul
completely
just as a woman should be

let me
walk with you
not behind you
not in front of you
but besides you
just as we were meant to be
rejoined
as man an woman
honoring you
with every step we take

let me
teach
you how to
smile again
ear to ear
cheekbones rising
eyes sparkling
teeth showing
with a hint of
what we call blushing

allow God
to show you
why I'm here
to verify to you...
that the past is gone
and our future
resides within
the permanent embrace
that He has placed in our souls

Slow Down

Have we gotten so busy and focused on ourselves that we have no regard for anyone else? Take for instance when driving, where someone would sit there and wait until it's clear to pull out into the lane, there are many that will just gun it in hopes that they make it causing you to have to slam on breaks or quickly switch lanes. Then there are the ones that weave in beind you, upset that you're only going 10 miles over the speed limit, so they decide to go around you doing 70 in a 35 while mean mugging you as they pass. Why are we in such a hurry to get 20 feet in front of one another. 9 times out of 10 you end up sitting at the same red light. What did you accomplish? Absolutely nothing. Where did our patience go, and how many people have to be hurt or killed by impatient drivers before we realize that we simply need to slow down. God Bless y'all.

I Do It Just Because...

I'll never brag about what I can do, will do, or have done for you. But, I will do everything I can to keep us happy together.

Dream Big

Who are we to tell someone what they can or can't dream? When did we become the authority on whether someone's goals are set too high? When a person works towards his or her dreams, they are putting a plan into action for their lives. Each of us has a specific destiny that we are supposed to work towards. We have a purpose. We must find that purpose for ourselves and walk in it in order to come into our destiny.

There are people in this life that serve as hindrances, or stumbling block on the way to your destiny. They poison your mind with doubt, with questions, and make you feel as if your purpose isn't worth the trouble. These naysayers can be friends, family, or complete strangers. We must protect our dreams and not allow the words and sentiments of these people cloud our judgment when it comes to making things happen for ourselves.

Always speak your dreams into existence, and maintain a positive vibe. Dismiss anyone or anything around you that may be throwing off a negative vibe, as this will prolong your journey to where you are supposed to be.

Lastly, be supportive of the dreams of others. One of the biggest things a dreamer needs is a positive support group. You can turn inches to miles depending on your level of faith, the correct mindset and the demeanor of the people surrounding you. Make strides towards your destiny, and let no one deter you from it. God Bless

Say What?

I just want to speak on something right quick. When did the people of America become such whiners? We take offense to so much these days that it's absolutely ridiculous. Now, I'm not one of those that will go out an proclaim to the world that the end is near, but you certainly have to wonder. Especially when you have people getting offended by someone simply telling you to "have a blessed day". Are you serious? There are so many more things that we could be worried about in life besides someone telling you to be blessed. Furthermore...why would you even run out and tell on someone for that? It's a tad too trivial for my taste. But, I do say this regardless. Have a Blessed Day!!!!! They should change the title of the USA to the DSC. The Divided States of Complainers.

New Video

I've put together a new video. This is a side of me that I haven't really put out there before so I hope you enjoy it. This is a short intro song that I wrote and produced called Carolina Homegrown. I am planning to use it as an intro to my work in Progress Spoken Word cd that has the working Title of Real Writing.

Pay It Forward

Good morning friends and family. I am so grateful to see another day. I'm also grateful that all of you have as well. When we lie down at night, there's no guarantee that we'll rise again...so this morning I ask this...Are you satisfied with what you're doing? Are you doing what you've always dreamed you'd do, or are you still "wishing" you could do it? Have you inspired, encouraged, or complimented anyone today? It's easy to criticize, or speak about what you don't like about someone or something...but what good comes of tearing someone down? WHy can't we build each other up? Are we afraid that someone might get more than what we have? Then go get yours...stop worrying about what he or she has and go get you some of your own. We all have the potential to do or be anything we want. Don't let your life's situations ever tell you otherwise. If you have information that you know will benefit others, pass it along...someone may need that..stop keeping things that are designed to prosper to yourselves....y'all ain't ready for this message today...I see networking going on between individuals all the time...and it brings a smile to my face each time I see it....but then it also saddens me...why? Because it's never "us", that I see sharing prosperity with one another. Every where I go...I see people attempting to build each other up, sharing information that could prove beneficial to others...but it's never "us". We have got to do better. We say a lot, but we never "do" anything. Our word can never be taken seriously. If we say we'll be there at 10, we don't show up until 2. If we say we got you, we always forget about you. If we say we support you...it usually start and ends with those words. Imagine how far we'd be if our pride didn't blind us.

Ranting...Something On My Mind...

There are opportunities in this world for each one of us. It doesn't matter if you're black, white, asian, or whatever race, color or creed you may be. It doesn't matter if you're gay, straight, fully able or disabled, there is something that you are destined to do. All of us have a talent for something, whether it's a hidden one of obvious ones. For some of us, it comes naturally, and for others, we have to take a really deep look within ourselves to find what it is we're the best at and capitalize on it.

Being a black man, I see and hear stories of struggle from other blacks every day. Now, that's not to say that no other race has hard times, because It's a fact that they do but, I too often hear people speak on how they can't do this or that, including myself in some cases, which is something that I'm working on personally. People in certain places and situations settle for what they have or don't have and place blame on invisible entities as to why they can never elevate from where they are. Now, I know that there are some hard-working individuals out there living paycheck to paycheck, barely keeping the bills paid, wishing they had more. I can relate to that. But on the flip die...you have others that complain about not having anything, not being able to obtain anything but then you see them doing not so intelligent things with the money that they do have.

I'll give an example to make my point. I saw a video just now of a rapper on stage at a concert and chaos ensued when people started throwing bottles on the stage. People, we need to take some responsibility for ourselves. The only way we're ever going to get ourselves out of a hole is is our mindset completely changes and we start acting in a way that inspires prosperity amongst ourselves. You cannot rise to the top while standing in a sinkhole. The same individuals that say they can barely scrape up enough money to keep their lights on are paying to go to a concert to basically show how much they dislike the person they paid to see? What? This makes absolutely no sense to me. This man that you dislike, has already gotten paid off of the money you spent so more than likely, he doesn't care whether he finishes the show or not. He got his, and guess what? You wasted yours, when you could have invested in something that could have potentially helped you escape the situation that you're in.

Let's get it together people..Help someone help themselves. We need each other. God Bless.

Don Savant Quote

Be careful of the things you concentrate on the most in life. These are the things that will grow and manifest themselves. Focus on positive things that will prosper you as opposed to things that will create problems for you.

Don Savant Quote

They say that closed mouths don't get fed...well, without food, we can't grow. In a relationship, communication is what feeds the union. Without it, you'll both starve to death.

Change Quote

We can change the world, but we'll make no progress by simply complaining.

Dave Hollister!!!!

Many of you may not consider this blog-worthy, but I have a difference of opinion on the matter. One of my all-time favorite R&B singers is apparently making his return after turning to gospel music. Now, let me say this. I absolutely love gospel music, especially those that stir your soul and makes you want to shout no matter where you are. I enjoy Mr. Hollister as a singer period, no matter what genre his music is in. It has been a while since I've heard him tear up a good old real-life-situation-everybody-done-been-through-it type R&B song. Well, my wish has been granted. ladies and gentlemen, I give you...Home. Enjoy!!!

To Black History

As you all know, February is Black History Month. I encourage all, black, white or otherwise to take some time out to learn more about the African Americans that have left a historic mark on this world. I also as that you not just do it within the confines of this short month, but do it at least periodically in order to gain more knowledge of who those individuals are. Whether it's on a worldwide, national, or local level, dig into the history of those that have made things possible for all of us. I'd like to take this time to introduce you all to one of my family members. His name is Albert Gray. Albert was the first Negro to attend Wofford College. In 1964, Albert Gray of Sptbg, SC enrolled at Wofford College, making him their first Negro student. He was drafted shortly after, but returned in '71 to finish his degree. After becoming a successful businessman, he joined Wofford's Board of Trustees. What I love an respect the most about this is the fact that he didn't enroll because someone for a group asked him to. He did it because he made his own mind up that he wanted to get his education at Wofford. A lot of people don't realize the power that lies in decision making..better yet, non-influential decision making.

Albert is such an inspiration to me simply because he had his dream, and he put a plan into action in order to achieve that dream. This is something that more of us need to do. there are far too many of us who want to do things but won't ever get anything going because of this excuse and that excuse. That's all they are, excuses. The only person or thing holding you back from anything at all in this world is you. It's time for us to get over ourselves and make things happen. There are so many followers in today's world. We're like big herds of cattle all following one another to wherever it is we're being led. We need more leaders, and we need them right now. That leadership starts in the mirror. It starts with faith. It starts with acknowledgment. If we believe we can do something then there should be nothing that can stand in the way of our getting it done. Here's to you cousin Albert!!!

Awesome Palindrome

A palindrome, like BOB, reads the same backwards as forward. This video reads the exact opposite backwards as forward. Not only does it read the opposite, the meaning is the exact opposite. This is only a 1 minute, 44 second video and it is brilliant. Make sure you read as well as listen…forward and backward.

This is a video that was submitted in a contest by a 20-year old.. The contest was titled "u @ 50" by AARP. This video won second place.. When they showed it, everyone in the room was awe-struck and broke into spontaneous applause. So simple and yet so brilliant. Take a minute and watch it.
